CHAPTER 9

Ray slammed on the brakes, coming to an abrupt stop in the middle of County Road 47. He threw his right arm over the back of his seat, turning his head back to look at what had caught his attention in the woods behind him and to his right. He put the car in reverse, backed up, and saw it again. What is that? he questioned, looking at the glimmer coming from the small stand of maples. He backed up a little more, and pulled off the road, stopping at the edge of the woods.

From this vantage point he could see the sun shining off the chrome of a green, Jeep Cherokee. It was nestled back amongst the trees, backed in and facing the road. Inside the vehicle he could see the silhouettes of two people, motionless, probably sleeping. I couldn’t be this lucky again in a million years, he thought. Caught napping. He had been right about the route Sanger and Haskell would take to MacDonald’s farm. I should have bought a lottery ticket this morning.

Ray backed his car back away from the edge of the woods, not wanting to be spotted if either of the fugitives should awaken and look his way. He didn’t want them spooked before reinforcements could arrive. He was brave, but not stupid. If he could get backup here before they awoke, it was the smart thing to do. If they awoke first, and tried to leave, then he would have a fight on his hands; one he’d take on without hesitation.

He got on his radio and made a broadcast to any law enforcement personnel who could come to his location. He followed up his initial call for assistance with, “Officer thought to be down. Do not use sirens or lights. Approach as quietly as possible.” He couldn’t be sure if Ed Brinks had been killed and dumped yet, but since he couldn’t see a third person in the Jeep, that was the likely scenario.

Ray was a long way out in the country and he knew it would be awhile before help would arrive, and who that help would be, he had no idea. He was pleasantly surprised when fifteen minutes later a state trooper arrived on the scene. Ray explained the situation to the trooper, and then they waited together for more help to arrive. What Ray wanted to accomplish was a show of force when the two criminals awoke from their naps. If five or six police cars were blocking their escape, they might think twice about putting up a fight.

Within forty-five minutes four additional backup vehicles had arrived, bearing a total of six additional officers. Now they numbered eight; four to one odds in their favor, and it was time to move. Neither suspect had moved a muscle during Ray’s wait, so it was decided that the officers would all fan out in a semicircle and move in slowly, hopefully catching Sanger and Haskell totally off guard; still sleeping.
